11 official Great Walks, 1 real decision

Pick a walk. See what it actually costs you in time, distance, and hut demand.

New Zealand's Department of Conservation runs 11 "Great Walks" — multi-day tracks with serviced huts, from a 2-day loop on Stewart Island to a 5-day river paddle down the Whanganui. Tap a walk below to see it, not a stock photo of "New Zealand hiking."

Mackinnon Pass on the Milford Track, Fiordland National Park

Milford Track

Fiordland National Park, South Island. Often called "the finest walk in the world" — four days through glacier-carved valleys, over Mackinnon Pass, to Milford Sound.

North Island, South Island, or a river

Eight of the 11 Great Walks are on the South Island, where Fiordland and the West Coast produce most of the fame — Milford, Routeburn, Kepler and Hump Ridge all sit within a few hours of each other around Te Anau. Two are on the North Island: the volcanic Tongariro Northern Circuit and the forested Lake Waikaremoana Track in Te Urewera. Stewart Island's Rakiura Track is its own category — New Zealand's third island, reached only by ferry or plane from Bluff or Invercargill. The 11th, the Whanganui Journey, is not a walk at all: it's five days by canoe or kayak down the Whanganui River, booked and hutted the same way as the ten walking tracks.

This matters for trip planning more than the brochures let on. A Milford-Routeburn-Kepler combination is a genuine Fiordland circuit you can link together. Tongariro and Waikaremoana are a different trip entirely, usually paired with Auckland or Wellington travel instead.

Milford Track

53.5 km · 4 days

Fiordland NP. The original Great Walk — Mackinnon Pass and Sutherland Falls, ending at Milford Sound.

South IslandHighest demand

Routeburn Track

32 km · 2–4 days

Fiordland / Mt Aspiring border. The shortest Great Walk and the easiest to do as a there-and-back weekend.

South IslandHighest demand

Kepler Track

60 km · 3–4 days

Fiordland NP. A closed loop from Te Anau — no transport logistics, which makes it the easiest Fiordland walk to plan.

South IslandHigh demand

Abel Tasman Coast Track

60 km · 3–5 days

Abel Tasman NP. New Zealand's most popular Great Walk — golden beaches, tidal crossings, water-taxi shortcuts.

South IslandHighest demand

Heaphy Track

78.4 km · 4–5 days

Kahurangi NP. The longest Great Walk — limestone karst to nikau-palm coastline, also open to mountain bikes off-season.

South IslandModerate demand

Rakiura Track

32 km · 3 days

Stewart Island. A loop track reached only by ferry from Bluff — the best realistic chance of a wild kiwi sighting.

Stewart IslandLower demand

Tongariro Northern Circuit

49 km · 2–3 days

Tongariro NP. Loops past the same volcanic terrain as the one-day Tongariro Alpine Crossing — a different track, often confused.

North IslandHigh demand

Lake Waikaremoana Track

44 km · 3–4 days

Te Urewera. New Zealand's least-crowded Great Walk, along the shoreline of a lake formed by a 2,200-year-old landslide.

North IslandLower demand

Paparoa Track

55 km · 2–3 days

Paparoa NP, West Coast. The newest Great Walk (opened 2019), built partly as the Pike29 Memorial Track — also open to mountain bikers.

South IslandLower demand

Hump Ridge Track

60 km · 3 days

Southland/Fiordland border. The newest addition to the official list, with its own separate booking system from the other ten.

South IslandBooked separately

Whanganui Journey

145 km · 5 days

Whanganui River. Not a walk — a canoe or kayak descent, huts and campsites booked the same way as the ten tracks. Shortened 3-day trips start at Whakahoro.

Will this hut still be available when you try to book it?

DOC opens Great Walks bookings for the whole next season on a handful of fixed mornings each May, and the popular tracks sell out fast. Pick a walk and a season to see the real pattern.

Sell-out risk: very high

Milford Track huts for peak season regularly book out within hours of bookings opening in mid-May, sometimes the same morning. Have an account ready and know your exact dates before the booking window opens.

Why hut bookings, specifically, run this trip

On a normal backcountry track, a Backcountry Hut Pass or a $5 ticket gets you a bunk on a first-come basis. Great Walks don't work that way: every bunk and every campsite is a paid, dated, named booking, and a Backcountry Hut Pass is explicitly not valid on any of them. That single rule is the reason this whole site exists as a comparison tool rather than a simple list — the question that actually decides your trip isn't "which walk looks nicest," it's "which walk's booking window I can actually win."

The huts are booked with DOC; the nights either side are a hotel question. Pick a region, search by name or town, and use Filters for stars, facilities or the Great Walk base towns (151 hotels) such as Te Anau, Queenstown, Nelson and Turangi.

Hotels for a walking trip

What to look for before and after a Great Walk

Stay in the base town

Tracks start with fixed boat or shuttle times. A room in Te Anau, Queenstown, Nelson or Turangi gets you to the start on time. Show these hotels.

Ask about luggage and early breakfast

Ask whether the hotel can hold bags while you walk, serve an early breakfast, or pack a lunch, and what time you can check in after a one-way finish.

Keep a spare night

Fiordland and the volcanic plateau can delay a start. A flexible rate or a spare night either side covers the weather. See where to stay.
