When to actually go
The "Great Walks season" isn't a suggestion — it's the window when huts are staffed, bridges are in, and the online booking system applies at all.
The Great Walks season, roughly November to April
Most Great Walks run their official season from around the start of November to the end of April (exact dates vary slightly by track — Kepler's runs late October to late April, for instance). Inside this window: huts are staffed by wardens, bridges are in place, tracks are actively maintained, and every bunk requires the paid online booking this whole site is about.
What changes outside the season
Outside the official season, most Great Walks huts drop back to standard, cheaper back-country status: no warden, reduced or no facilities, and — on some tracks — bridges physically removed ahead of winter to prevent avalanche damage, as happens on Milford. The Milford Track specifically becomes technically walkable in either direction off-season, but DOC treats it as a serious, self-sufficient winter tramping trip, not a scaled-down version of the normal walk. Don't assume "off-season" just means "quieter" — on the alpine tracks it can mean genuinely more dangerous.
The one real exception: Heaphy's mountain-bike window
The Heaphy Track flips this pattern. Outside the walking season, it opens to mountain bikes between 1 May and 30 November — a completely different, legitimate way to do the track, not a fallback. If you're flexible on walking vs. riding, this is worth building a shoulder-season trip around.
Peak vs. shoulder: what you're actually trading off
December through February is peak: warmest weather, longest days, and by far the hardest bookings to win — see the booking system guide. November and March–April (shoulder season) trade a little weather reliability and slightly shorter days for meaningfully better hut availability and noticeably fewer people on track. For most of the walks on this list, shoulder season is the more comfortable trip, not just the easier booking.
Rule of thumb: if your dates are flexible, shoulder season (November or March–April) usually beats peak season on every axis except guaranteed warmth. If they're not flexible and you're set on December–February, book the moment your track's window opens — see the booking system guide for exactly when that is.
