Kepler Track

The only Great Walk in this Fiordland cluster that starts and finishes in the same town, on foot, with no shuttle to arrange. That alone makes it the easiest of the three to actually plan around a flight or a job.

A genuine loop from Te Anau

Most walkers go anti-clockwise: a boat or road walk out of Te Anau to the Kepler's start, up to Luxmore Hut on day one, over the exposed alpine section to Iris Burn Hut on day two, down to lakeside Moturau Hut on day three, and back into Te Anau via Rainbow Reach on day four. Because both ends connect back to the same town, there's no second shuttle booking to coordinate — book the huts and you've solved transport.

The three huts

  • Luxmore Hut — 54 bunks, above the bushline with views across Lake Te Anau and the Murchison Mountains; the alpine centrepiece of the walk.
  • Iris Burn Hut — reached via the exposed ridge section from Luxmore, in a valley below the peaks.
  • Moturau Hut — 40 bunks, on the shore of Lake Manapouri; consistently rated the quietest, most scenic overnight of the three.

The alpine section can close

The stretch between Luxmore Hut and Iris Burn Hut climbs to around 1,400m and is the walk's real crux. In snow it can require crampons and an ice axe and carries genuine avalanche risk; DOC closes or reroutes this section in poor conditions, including sometimes in shoulder season, not just deep winter. Check current alerts before you fly in expecting the full loop to be open.

Booking pattern

The Kepler's Great Walks season runs from late October to late April. Bookings for a given season open on a fixed May morning each year (9:30am on the announced date) as part of DOC's staggered rollout — see the booking system guide for how that staggering works across all 11 walks. Demand is high but the loop's flexibility (you can sometimes still find single nights even when a full 4-day run is booked out) gives it slightly more room than Milford or Routeburn.
